Our ASG grantee Atiya Abbas who is our Fulbright alumna successfully started her grant project titled “A Citizen Journalism Course for Young Adults”. The project is supported by the U.S. Embassy in Pakistan in partnership with the Pakistan U.S. Alumni Network. Day one of this six-weeks long training course wrapped up on a high note. A total number of 38 participants, comprising 19 women and 19 men from various universities across Karachi were taught the processes of writing stories for social media, digital media, and television. They were then taken on a field trip to Empress Market to search for stories and brainstorm ideas for a story they want to do for the next five weeks. In the coming sessions, they will be taught the ethics of photojournalism i.e., how to record sound bytes and interview sources for their video projects. Through this training, the team is very excited to be learning from these bright young minds and teaching them how real-world journalism happens in a participatory setting. “A big thank you to our grant partners and the Lincoln Corners Sindh for being our venue partner,” shared Atiya.
