Cultivating Minds: A Voyage through STEM at 5-Day PUAN’s Masterclass

Amidst the serene landscapes of Murree, a captivating five-day Masterclass unfolded, driven by the collaboration between the Pakistan-U.S. Alumni Network (PUAN) and Kohsar University Murree (KUM). With the steadfast support of the U.S. Mission Pakistan, this event emerged as a beacon of intellectual exploration and innovation, promising a transformative experience for all involved.

Spanning from August 21 to 25, 2023, the Masterclass seamlessly united 39 U.S. government exchange alumni hailing from diverse corners of Pakistan – from the captivating valleys of Baltistan to the vibrant regions of Mehran. These participants, representing a kaleidoscope of expertise spanning IT firms, think-tanks, incubators, academic institutions, and governmental bodies, converged with a shared objective: to nurture critical thinking through the lens of STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.

Highlights of Day I

The inaugural day bustled with activity as participants registered and obtained their study materials, laying the groundwork for a week of profound exploration. The event inaugurated with an enlightening opening ceremony, graced by three distinguished speakers who kindled the flames of curiosity. Prof. Habib Bokhari set the tone with his insightful discourse on “Science & Technology Enriching Analytical Modules (STEAM) for Inspiring Science Leaders,” reshaping the contours of STEM education within the context of holistic health.

Continuing the momentum, Dr. Alyia Zafar, an academic trailblazer, emphasized the pivotal intersections of STEM education. The day’s discussions also encompassed a captivating panel session, where luminaries from diverse fields shared their perspectives, weaving a rich tapestry of insights.

With each passing day, the Masterclass delved deeper into the heart of STEM, guided by esteemed mentors and experts. From the fundamental building blocks of DNA to the intricate world of protein discovery, participants embarked on an immersive journey under the guidance of luminaries such as Dr. Muhammad Baber, Prof. Habib Bokhari, and a team of accomplished educators. Yet, this journey was far from solitary – interactive sessions and panel discussions facilitated a dynamic exchange of ideas and experiences, mirroring the collaborative essence of STEM itself.

Shah Rukh Babar, CEO of Xylexa, along with Dr. Sara and Dr. Shehroz, the driving forces behind the continuation of the DNA-to-Protein odyssey, led participants through the realms of critical thinking and data analysis. The Masterclass also delved into the exciting realm of bioinformatics and the art of successful science entrepreneurship, where the fusion of innovation and business acumen was celebrated.

Proceedings of Day 2

The second day of the PUAN Masterclass, set against the picturesque backdrop of Murree, dawned with a promise of intellectual exploration and collaboration. On this transformative Tuesday, August 22, 2023, the event embarked on a dynamic journey, offering a series of engaging activities that ignited curiosity and inspiration.

The morning commenced with an invigorating session of Leaders’ Short Talks, styled after the captivating format of TED Talks. Two notable voices took the stage:

  1. Prof. Dr. Munazza Yaqoob illuminated the integration of critical thinking within classroom education.
  2. Mr. Imran Jatala shared insights on interdisciplinary sciences’ role in addressing challenges and preparing the workforce, focusing on the National Incubation Center for Aerospace Technologies (NICAT).

Guided by Prof. Syed Habib Bokhari, Dr. Aftab Ahmed, Dr. Sundus Javed, Dr. Zobia, and Dr. Shahid, the participants delved into a “One Health” exploration during the hands-on modules. The modules unfolded in two phases:

a) Forensics & Criminal Investigation, Molecular Diagnostics & Microbial: Case Studies – Through intriguing case studies, the intersection of science and justice was explored, showcasing the power of molecular diagnostics in solving mysteries.

b) Microbiome & Health – Participants immersed themselves in the world of microbiomes and their health implications, examining case studies on stunting, obesity, preterm births, and cancer in Pakistan. A participant’s testimonial shared their engagement and excitement.

The day’s discoveries and experiments from the prior day yielded insightful discussions and interactive sessions, nurturing the participants’ analytical prowess. The afternoon was dedicated to the integration of computer science and biology in education. Guided by experts Dr. Qasim Sheikh and Dr. Zafar Alvi (Digi Skills/ Digital Pakistan), participants explored synergies:

  • Online Education & Hierarchical Learning Models
  • Data Science & Enhanced Career Connectivity
  • Modern Ecosystem of Education Management (Post-Covid-19)
  • Accelerated Skill Learning in a Short Span

As the day transitioned into its final phase, Mr. Khet Kumar discussed “Building Bridges” through robotics and coding education for underprivileged K-12 students. Simultaneously, Mr. Pervaiz Abbasi from NIC, Islamabad, presented successful entrepreneurial case studies, tracing the journey from incubation to startup achievement. Panel discussions enriched the discourse, incorporating diverse perspectives.

Proceedings of Day 3

Wednesday, August 23, 2023, unveiled the third chapter of the PUAN Masterclass, radiating with a vibrant mix of short lectures and demonstrations that promised to broaden horizons and inspire innovation.

Guided by Prof. Syed Habib Bokhari (US alumnus), Dr. Sajjad Sandhu, and Dr. Ramla, participants embarked on an enlightening journey. The collaboration extended to Dr. Qasim, Dr. Shahida, Dr. Luqman, Dr. Waqas, Dr. Rehan, Asma Bibi, and Dr. Sami from KUM. Mr. Ghazanfar Azam, CEO of Mobilink, shared insights on “Development and Latest Trends of Entrepreneurship,” emphasizing strategies for public-private partnerships and co-creation in co-working spaces.

Diverse perspectives on biodiversity and its relation to “One Health” were unveiled through engaging talks by Prof. Habib Bokhari and Dr. Qasim. Waste management’s role in this ecosystem was delved into by Dr. Rehan and Mr. Hameed Ullah.

A captivating exploration of game-based environmental education and science learning, coupled with insights into the social messaging gaming industry, offered a fresh perspective on learning.

Dr. Sajjad Sandhu’s discourse on kitchen gardening added a touch of practicality, setting the stage for lively discussions and interactive sessions, enriching participants’ understanding.

A session featuring luminaries like Prof. Arshad S. Bhatti, Dr. Z. B. Mirza, Syed Habib Bokhari, and more, focused on the integration of technology and skills across computer science, mathematics, physics, and biology in classrooms. Prof. Habib Bokhari and Prof. A.S Bhatti delved into the intriguing world of biophysics and nanotechnology. Dr. Rehan Mahmood’s insights into remote sensing and GIS mapping, illustrated through an agricultural and forestry case study, sparked curiosity.

The engaging sessions were punctuated with practical experiences, including the application of drones, which garnered active participation and enthusiasm. The discussions flowed seamlessly, creating an environment where knowledge and curiosity flourished. A unique element, “Science Fights,” was introduced, where participants pitched their ideas that were assigned pre-Masterclass, defending them before an expert jury. This set the stage for the upcoming sessions, fostering a competitive yet collaborative spirit.

Proceedings of Day 4

Thursday, August 24, 2023, marked the unfolding of the fourth chapter in the saga of the PUAN Masterclass. The day was a tapestry of hands-on experiences, engaging modules, and captivating fieldwork that awaited the participants, promising an immersive learning experience.

Under the expert guidance of Dr. Muhammad Asif Aziz, In-Charge of the Honeybee Research Unit at UAAR, Naveed Ahmad, CEO of Mr. Bee Honey Farms, and Dr. Sumaira from KUM, the day commenced with a journey into the world of Beekeeping Skills Training & Sustainability. A Leaders’ Short Talk set the tone, focusing on the significance of beekeeping skills for environmental sustainability and biodiversity. Panel discussions echoed with diverse voices, engaging participants in interactive sessions that enriched their understanding while igniting their curiosity.

An intriguing highlight of the day was the “Science Fights” session, where participants engaged in a riveting intellectual arena. The session unfolded in three different rooms simultaneously, where participants embraced different roles. This intellectual showdown showcased participants’ analytical prowess and innovative thinking, fostering healthy competition and collaboration.

A well-deserved break allowed participants to recharge before the continuation of the dynamic “Science Fights.” This exercise not only sharpened critical thinking but also nurtured adaptability and teamwork, fostering a holistic approach to problem-solving.

The day concluded with a reflective discussion on learning outcomes, assignments, and a panel discussion that amplified the diverse voices of participants. The interactive session enriched comprehension and propelled participants towards further exploration.

As the sun set on the fourth day of the Masterclass, participants carried with them a treasure trove of experiences, insights, and a sharpened intellectual edge. The PUAN Masterclass journey, a fusion of knowledge and camaraderie, continued to illuminate their paths, fostering a collective spirit of inquiry and innovation.

Proceedings of Day 5 and the Closing Ceremony

The Masterclass culminated in a momentous closing ceremony, where Grace Carroll, Deputy Cultural Affairs Officer at the U.S. Embassy Islamabad, acknowledged the participants’ commitment to critical thinking and STEM. Their relentless efforts, she underscored, would play a pivotal role in shaping policies and institutions.

In conclusion, Dr. Habib Bokhari, Vice-Chancellor of Kohsar University Murree, reflected on the true essence of the Masterclass. It wasn’t just about assimilating facts and formulas; it was about nurturing a mindset rooted in critical thinking that would illuminate participants’ academic, professional, and personal endeavors.

More than a series of lectures and discussions, the Masterclass provided an immersive experience that urged participants to question, explore, and innovate. Esteemed speakers such as Prof. Dr. Arshad Saleem Bhatti, Dr. Zafer Alvi, and Mr. Pervaiz Abbasi emphasized the role of interdisciplinary approaches in tackling global challenges. This event not only celebrated the participants’ ingenuity but also forged a collaborative environment crucial for advancing STEM education.

As the curtains descended on this transformative Masterclass, the participants carried forward a newfound fervor for critical thinking and STEM, poised to shape a future where innovation knows no bounds.
