When it comes to damage by the catastrophic Pakistan floods, there is nothing new under the sun. The lives and homes are all lost as weeks of torrential rains and flash floods have ravaged Pakistan. But in times of tragedy, we always see moments of human resilience and empathy. PUAN flood warriors have given incredible stories of human endurance, kindness, and bravery that have emerged in floods’ aftermath. Samman Raza is one of them.
Samman is our 2017 Youth Exchange, and Study Program (YES) alumna. She started her flood relief work in August. Starting from Punjab with a collected donation of 300,000 rupees, she and her team covered the areas of Fazilpur, Taunsa, and Rajanpur by distributing water bottles, biscuit packets, dates, chips, milk packs, mosquito nets, charpaiyaan [wooden beds], tents, and hygiene kits for over 300 females. They also established two medical camps for flood victims.
After Punjab, Saman and her team started flood relief activities in Swat. They distributed food packages for hundreds of families. “We started with limited donations in Swat, but we are still working on it, and we will support more families as soon as we get more money and collect more donations,” shared Samman. For Sindh, the need assessment survey is being conducted to decide which area to be covered first and donations are also being collected.
